Oil on alluminium panel – Tropical Red – Exotic rare plants, Kew Gardens, London, 25x20cm.
Continuing a current theme and inspired by the legacy of plant explorers; JD Hooker and his father before him both acted as Director of Kew Gardens in London and established the Plant Houses that brought together plants from all over the world. JD Hooker was a close friend and correspondent with Charles Darwin whom he exchanged letters regarding their ideas. Those who visit the Plant houses from around the world continue to be inspired by them and the collection of plants discovered and brought there by intrepid plant explorers – just as I was inspired to make this artwork.
This artwork is handmade by placing an inked up damp paper plate onto piece of polished aluminium specially prepared. They are then run through a heavy press that transfers the image onto the metal plate. Trial and error produce the exact colour and effect I desire.
The image is printed onto an aluminium plate which is reflective and changes according to the light. It does not need a glass frame as it can be gently wiped clean. The print is supplied with a method of hanging it ‘floating’ without a frame on your wall. If you prefer it without this attached, please let me know by email [email protected]
