It was wonderful to watch the busy comings and goings of these penguins while visiting the antarctic in 2014 and I was well and truly captivated by the penguins that live here. This charismatic and busy looking Gentoo Penguin for me captures their busy lives and the fact that an adult spends most of the day doing as many as 450 dives a day foraging for food. Hatchlings remain in the nest for up to a month, and the parents alternate foraging and brooding duties. They populate the Antarctic Peninsula and numerous islands around the frozen continent and are protected by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 and received near threatened status on the IUCN Red List in 2007.

The print is made by transferring the image by hand onto a metal plate which is then etched in acid. The plate is then hand inked and run through the press with dampened paper which is then dried for a week in heavily weighted blotting paper.

There are four other penguins available in this series
